Things have changed in the job market since I started Start Recruiting and Training in 2010. At the time, unemployment was 11%. I thought it was a great time to attract some new talent into retail automotive, and we did.
Now the unemployment rate is 3.2%, and it looks like 2018 will be our best year yet. On average this year we are placing 40 people per month, and we had highs of 45 and 50 in one month. The hunt is definitely harder. Sometimes it feels like one step forward and two steps back, but there are still great candidates out there, and we know where they live.
This Year through September we set 1144 interviews and have trained and placed 350 people. We also have experienced about 8 per month falling out (changing their mind) between being selected and training. Even with the fall out and falling unemployment rate I expect a 20% increase this year. The car business is still an excellent opportunity for those who understand the value of self-determination.
Grinding it Out - Wins Out!
A shout out to our recruiters who understand the grind more than most men I know. Every week is a new race for two to three stores, and they step up every week and run the race. Hundreds of phone screens, database searches emails and cold calls to set 30 to 40 interviews with those that think this opportunity sounds like fun.
Then a shout out to our trainer, who every week prepares the selected candidates for their best chance of success. Presenting the real workload to success and why this opportunity is unique and fun.
Lastly, a shout out to all of the new hires. You are the biggest reason that makes our job fun for us. Since 2010, we have placed over 3000 people into the car business and watched as this opportunity became life-changing for a lot of families. We watched as some stayed successful salespeople while others moved into management becoming sales managers, finance managers, and general managers. All opportunities they created for themselves in a business that appreciates people that understand the value of self-determination.
